Proofreading and copyediting
Different writers have different needs, so my approaches are discussed in more detail below.
My approach
Your voice is the most important one. Therefore, my ethos centres on making supportive editorial enhancements to ensure that your writing is as clear and effective as it can be – in essence, that your writing does what you need it to do.
Getting in touch
In the first instance, you can contact me by email or contact form to discuss your requirements and obtain a quotation for the cost of the work. It is useful to send a sample of your writing at this point. After talking through your needs, I will send you a quote, which will include feedback on how I can assist you and further information on the proofreading or copyediting process. I am happy to tailor my approach to specific requirements and these can be discussed and agreed at this stage.
Do I need proofreading or copyediting?
Proofreading is suitable for texts that are prepared and need reviewing for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation. This method identifies minor issues with sense, consistency and formatting where required and helps to ensure that your text is ready for your readership. Proofreading is suitable for all writers, including students.
Copyediting is a more intensive process which is appropriate for text in draft form. In addition to incorporating some elements of proofreading, copyediting identifies changes for structure, tone, consistency, formatting and referencing. In-house style guides and referencing systems can be applied.
A comprehensive approach to editing is also offered for writers requiring intensive restructuring / revision, additional research / checking or multiphase editing.
The proofreading / copyediting process
Much of my work uses track changes in Microsoft Word to highlight alterations within the text and comments boxes to raise queries where necessary. Other formats can also be used, including PDF. Once the work has been carried out, you will be sent two finalised documents: a ‘clean’ version and a ‘track-changed’ version. I am always available to talk through the changes that have been made, or collaborate further if this is required. I am also happy to email, call or Skype to discuss your needs and will make regular contact to keep you updated on the work.
Working to your deadlines
I recognise the importance of meeting deadlines and I will work with you to ensure that your work is ready in good time. Progressive deadlines can be agreed for work that requires multiple stages of editing.
Academic referencing
For academic work, it is vital that citations and reference lists / bibliographies are accurate. I have extensive experience of working with different referencing systems including, Harvard, APA and Chicago. I will ensure that your work uses all of the appropriate conventions in accordance with your organisation’s or subject’s chosen system.
Understanding the need for confidentiality
I maintain the utmost confidentiality on all assignments and can sign a confidentiality agreement where appropriate.
University proofreading regulations
Students should consult their university’s guidelines on using a proofreader. This is particularly important to ensure that the work meets the correct requirements. You can send me a copy of these or a link before the work commences.
Payments
An invoice will be sent on completion of the work for immediate payment. Payments can be made by bank transfer or cheque.
